The first race of the year is usually always the toughest as you slam the body back into submission. This season I decided to make the Bainbridge Island Half Marathon (13.1M) my first race of the season. I usually do triathalons so it was a real treat to start this run 100% fresh. My goal was pretty simple - compelte the course in under 2 hours. As I stepped up to the starting line on Winslow I realized the race conditions could'nt have been be any more perfect - cool, sunny & dry. It was obvious heat was not going to be a factor. Below was my fueling plan for this event:
- 1 EFS Liquid Shot (over 2 hours)
- 2 (25oz) bottles of Carbo Pro
- 10 Endurolytes tablets (every 15 minutes)
- 4 Hammer Gels (every 30 minutes)
Studying the course elevation profile the 3 hills at miles 1, 6, & 9 were to be expected. I took the downhills with everything I had. The second hill was by far the toughest. One hour into the race I comfortably found myself at mile marker 7 thinking with just 6 miles to go I got this ione in the bag. As I remember 75% of the course was shady & the waterside views along Puget Sound were great for my morale. Looking back I don't know if I could have ran this race any better than I did - at my current fitness level. I stuck to my fueling strategy & gave it everything I had. What else could you ask for. Mission Accomplished.
